Bangladesh, Khagrachhari | February 21, 2026: Senior representatives of the Bangladesh Christian Association, Khagrachhari District Committee, paid tribute to the Language Martyrs at the Khagrachhari Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday, marking Great Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day.

The delegation laid a floral wreath at the monument and observed a moment of silence in remembrance of those who were killed during the 1952 Language Movement. Similar programs were held across the country.

February 21 commemorates the students who sacrificed their lives demanding recognition of Bangla as a state language. In 1999, UNESCO declared the date International Mother Language Day to promote linguistic diversity worldwide.

In the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where several Indigenous languages are spoken, the observance holds particular importance. Community representatives noted that the spirit of the Language Movement represents not only the defense of Bangla but also the broader principle of linguistic rights and cultural dignity.

Christian leaders in Khagrachhari emphasized that language remains closely connected to identity, heritage, and survival for minority and Indigenous communities in the hills. They said honoring the martyrs is also a reminder of the need to respect and protect all mother tongues in Bangladesh.

District committee members, church representatives, and women religious participants joined the tribute ceremony.

Across Bangladesh, government institutions, political parties, educational establishments, and civil society organizations observed the day with wreath-laying and memorial programs. In Khagrachhari, the participation of the Christian community reflected the inclusive and multi-ethnic character of the region.
